Aviation and the Environment

Course content

The course will comprise the following elements:

 

Aircraft/Engine Noise

  • Introduction to noise theory, sources, measurement and effects
  • Reduction measures including technical and operational techniques, noise insulation programmes, noise charging schemes
  • ICAO guidance including the Balanced Approach to Noise Reduction
  • Relevant EU directives

Aircraft Engine Emissions

  • Introduction to simple jet engine theory, including typical modern engine design, the combustion process and what types of emissions this produces
  • The emissions which affect local air quality, their related health implications, and applicable EU and national legislation,
  • The effects of emissions on the global atmosphere, including a simple introduction to climate science and the related contribution of aviation emissions
  • Introduction to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Kyoto Protocol and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)
  • Technical, operational and economic measures for emissions reduction, including local emissions charging schemes and the inclusion of aviation in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme
  • Status of ICAO action on emissions, including guidance material, recent Assembly Resolutions and related follow-on activities

General Issues

  • An introduction to sustainable development and its social, economic and environmental elements
  • Airport infrastructure operation (waste and water management, energy consumption, emissions, land use, etc)
  • Aircraft design, manufacture, maintenance and disposal (material/chemical usage, waste management, energy consumption, etc)

Organisational Aspects

  • An overview of the roles, responsibilities, membership and current activities of those organisations involved in addressing the aviation environmental issue. It includes the ICAO, the EU institutions, ECAC, States, industry and non-governmental organisations.

Sources of Information

  • A review of information sources including key documents, regulations and Internet sites

 

Course prerequisites

The course is given in English and will include the opportunity for discussion on issues arising from the content – indeed this is encouraged. Participants should therefore have a good command of the English language and a basic knowledge of civil aviation.
